Operating heavy equipment on a worksite is a major responsibility, and not everybody is up to the challenge. That’s why it’s imperative that you take the time to find the best possible candidates to operate machinery at your site. It isn’t always easy, however, to find equipment operators who will be as safe, responsible, and reliable as you need them to be. Here are some tips for finding the right operators:
Look for the right certifications.
Every heavy equipment operator should meet at least a basic level of competence for the job. They should have a driver’s license that permits them to operate a commercial vehicle, and they should have completed formal training in order to operate the equipment. Operators with actual worksite experience, and those who have done apprenticeships with hands-on training, should be given precedence.
Run a background check.
It’s now become standard to do background checks when hiring employees at most companies. This will help to protect you from hiring an individual who might turn out to be a dangerous addition to your staff, and it will also help to ensure that the person you hire has the credentials they claim to have. In addition to the obvious checks—no drug offenses, no criminal record—you will probably want to look for any warning signs that a person may be irresponsible.
Do a personal interview.
You should never hire a new heavy equipment operator for your site without first talking to them in person. Try to get a sense of what their priorities are and how committed they would really be to the job. You should pay attention to how focused and present they are during the interview, as this can be a good sign of how alert and responsible they would be during their daily duties as an equipment operator.
